Lime production site: why cleaning with water is a bad idea

On a lime production site, water is not just a question of cleanliness: it is a real safety risk. Quicklime in contact with water triggers a violent exothermic chemical reaction, exactly what you want to avoid during a simple cleaning of conveyors, silos or mixers.

Why water is dangerous on a lime site

Quicklime (calcium oxide) reacts with water to form slaked lime, a strongly exothermic reaction that can push the temperature above 150 °C in a few seconds. On a pile of dust or residue built up in a silo, conveyor or mixer, an uncontrolled reaction can cause caustic splashes, serious chemical and thermal burns for operators, and even a fire in the most severe cases.

Scraping and vacuuming: the limits when facing a chemical risk

Manual scraping exposes the operator directly to lime dust, which irritates the skin, eyes and airways. Industrial vacuuming limits this contact but takes a long time on silos and conveyors that are hard to reach, and never fully removes the deposits encrusted in corners. And even without water, dry handling creates a cloud of fine dust that remains a respiratory risk if it is not properly extracted.

Dry ice cleaning: a dry and safe solution

Dry ice cleans by dry blasting, without introducing a single drop of water onto the installation: no risk of exothermic reaction, no caustic splashes. The CO2 sublimates instantly into gas on contact with the surface, which greatly limits the dust stirred up compared with scraping or compressed air. The blasting removes lime deposits encrusted on silo walls, screw conveyors and mixers without requiring the line to be fully dismantled.

What it concretely changes for site safety

By taking water out of the equation entirely, the risk of an uncontrolled exothermic reaction disappears completely during the job. Operators work without exposure to caustic splashes, which reduces the risk of accidents and simplifies prevention plans. On the operations side, the absence of heavy dismantling reduces the downtime of silos and conveyors, and regular preventive maintenance limits the build-up of deposits that eventually promote corrosion of metal structures.

When to consider it first

Dry ice cleaning is particularly suited to the regular maintenance of storage silos, conveyors and mixers where lime builds up continuously, before a technical inspection or a regulatory check, and systematically whenever water cleaning is considered out of habit without measuring the real risk. It suits production installations as well as storage and packaging areas.
